GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant that lives inside editors like VS Code and JetBrains. It started as autocomplete and has expanded to chat and agent-style features, but finishing the line or block you are already writing is still its core strength.

It is weaker than newer agentic tools at planning and carrying out a whole feature across many files.

Good for

  • Inline code completion while you type
  • Developers who want AI without changing editors
  • Boilerplate, tests, and repetitive code
  • Teams that already use GitHub for repositories

Watch out for

  • Suggestions can be subtly wrong, so review before accepting
  • Whole-feature planning is less capable than agentic tools
